Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of animals do you have available for adoption?
Most often we have dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and rabbits. Sometimes we have ferrets and guinea pigs available for adoption. Our variety of available animals depends on the types of animals surrendered to us.
How much does it cost to adopt an animal from GCHS?
Our adoption fees range from $20 for a rabbit to $125 for a purebred dog or cat. Please contact our adoption center for additional information on specific adoption fees and specials.
How much does it cost to surrender an animal to GCHS?
Effective January 18, 2008: $30 per cat and $50 per dog. These fees help to offset the cost of providing medical care, food, and shelter to the pet while he/she is in our care.
Do you provide veterinary services to the public?
Yes! Our new Veterinary Clinic is located in the Bobby Weinley Building at 2008 Arcadia Street in Fort Myers. The Clinic offers affordable spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, examinations, heartworm testing and preventatives, fecal testing, and microchip implants. To schedule an appointment please call 239.332.2719.
Will you pick-up lost/stray/abused pets?
GCHS accepts only owner-surrendered pets who are brought to our shelter facility in Fort Myers. We do not have the means to pick-up lost, stray, or abused pets. To report a lost/stolen/found/abused pet, please contact Lee County Animal Services at 239.LEE.PETS. (239.533.7387)
How long do the animals stay at your shelter?
Once an animal is surrendered to our shelter he/she remains in our care until he/she is placed in a new, forever home. GCHS does not euthanize for space and will provide humane care for an animal for as long as it takes to find the right family.
Do you offer boarding services?
We currently do not offer boarding services. Our shelter space is reserved for owner-surrendered animals in need of new, forever homes.
Are you funded by the county or another humane society?
No, we do not receive funding from any government entity or other humane organization nor are we affiliated with any other national or local humane organizations. We rely on donations, fundraising events, and grants to sustain our programs and services.
Where are you located?
Gulf Coast Humane Society is located at 2010 Arcadia Street in Fort Myers, Florida approximately 2 miles west of I-75 off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd across the street from Fleamasters Fleamarket.
