Frequently Asked Questions

Owner Surrenders

The Gulf Coast Humane Society can only take animals that are surrendered by their owner. There is a $50 surrender fee to help offset the cost of caring for your animal while it is at the shelter. Due to requirements by Lee County Animal Services, we are unable to take strays or abandoned animals. These animals should be taken to Lee County Animal Services.

Euthanasia

Gulf Coast Humane Society does  not euthanize for lack of space or length of time spent at our facility.  We have very strict guidelines for the performance of euthanasia:

ONLY animals found to have health conditions that are deemed untreatable or severely contagious and will place the other pets in our care in harm will be considered for euthanasia.

ONLY those animals found to be severely aggressive and are a threat to the general public will be considered for euthanasia.  In cases of severe aggression we utilize a five-step policy before such a decision is made.

Spay and Neuter

We spay or neuter all animals prior to adoption.  Spaying and neutering is the first step in the battle against pet overpopulation. Spaying and neutering your pets also provides numerous health and behavioral benefits.

Available Animals

Most often we have dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, and rabbits.  Sometimes we have ferrets and guinea pigs available for adoption.  Our variety of available animals depends on the types of animals surrendered to us.

Pick-up of lost, stray, abused pets

The Gulf Coast Humane Society accepts only owner-surrendered pets who are brought to our shelter facility in Fort Myers.  We do not have the means to pick-up lost, stray, or abused pets.  To report a lost, stolen, found, or abused pet, please contact Lee County Animal Services at 239.LEE.PETS.  (239.533.7387)

Funding

No, we do not receive funding from any government entity or other humane organization nor are we affiliated with any other national or local humane organizations.  We rely on donations, fundraising events, and grants to sustain our programs and services.
