Meet Sunset, who on January 27th became the Gulf Coast Humane Society’s most recent Second Chance Fund Recipient. Sunset arrived at Gulf Coast Humane Society with severe wounds and lacerations to her legs, face, and neck. Sunset is suspected to have been used as a bait dog, which is a dog used to train other dogs to fight. According to the Humane Society of the United States dog fighting is, “a sadistic "contest" in which two dogs—specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight—are placed in a pit (generally a small arena enclosed by plywood walls) to fight each other for the spectators' entertainment and gambling.” It is a felony in all 50 states and is a felony offense under federal law.

Over the past week the GCHS staff has watched in wonderment as Sunset took her first feeble steps towards recovery. Sunset is the epitome of resilient. Even after all she has been through she still wants to trust people. After being malnourished and having a body square of one, the lowest rank an emaciated dog can receive, she is accepting of food, treats and is greatly enjoying all of the love and attention she is receiving.

We've been blown away by the amount of support the community has shown for Sunset. To show your support for Sunset please consider donating to the Second Chance Fund. This fund allows people to donate directly to the care of our sick and special needs animals, which helps to alleviate some of the financial cost that comes with their extra care needed. All monies donated to the Second Chance Fund will directly offset the medical cost for those pets with needs beyond routine medical care, because at the GCHS we believe in giving EVERY animal a second chance.
